Description	These two letters were written by Thomas Rotch of Kendal, Ohio (now Massillon) and deal with the relationships between settlers and the American Indians. In the first four-page letter, Rotch assures his parents that the settlement is not in danger of an attack by American Indians, despite the fact that the American Indians allied with the British during the War of 1812. He reports the presence of troops in the area, however, to protect neighboring towns. It measures 8" x 9.5" (20.32 x 24.13 cm). In a second four-page letter, written in 1818, Rotch reports for the Quaker Committee on Indian Concerns, of which he was a member. He describes the status of the Delaware, Miami, and Wyandot peoples and explains that many of them were removed to the West. He also discusses a treaty with the Sandusky chiefs. This letter, which measures 8" x 9.75" (20.32 x 24.77 cm), appears to be in the handwriting of Charity Rotch, his wife. Thomas Rotch (1767-1823), a Quaker and early settler of Kendal, was active in the abolition movement and conducted slaves to freedom on the Underground Railroad. The Rotch-Wales Collection comprises several thousand items, including Quaker and abolitionist materials, household remedies and recipes, weather reports and machinery plans, and personal letters of Thomas and Charity Rotch and their family. It contains personal and business correspondence, diaries, documents, accounts, ledgers, and daybooks. A large portion of the collection consists of the personal and business correspondence, documents, and business papers of Arvine Wales I (1785-1854), who accompanied Rotch from Hartford to Ohio in 1811, worked for him, and carried on Rotch's business interests after his death. The papers of his son, Arvine C. Wales (1827-1882), a lawyer and civic leader in Massillon, are also part of the collection.

Full Text	[page 1] [corresponds to page one of letter from Thomas Rotch to his parents, October 27, 1812] Kendal Stark Co Ohio 10th mo 27th 1812 Dear Parents There has been such a sameness in this part of the state that I have hardly had anything to urge the necessity of keeping you steadily informed of our situation untill from a letter writen at Norwich by A Sherman dated the 28th of last mo. saying that many reports were in circulation representing this state as in a very suffering condition (I suppose he ment from the Indians. this he so fully contradicted as to allay the fears of our fnds at Hartford) It has been assertain =ed by the many parties of rangers and especially by a detachment of 150 men from General Harrisons Army that there are no Indians to be found this side of the River Resin where they found a party that they sur =prised and drove off. General Bells Army are yet in the neighbourhood of Mansfield delaying for the arrival of an Army of two thousand Men One hundred and sixty Waggons with Sixty pieces of Artilery com= =manded by General Wadsworth of Connecticut.
