Description	These two 8.5" by 11" (22 by 28 cm) photographs show Vitrolite, a colored glass produced by the Libbey-Owens-Ford Company, used in various buildings in Toledo, Ohio. The first photograph is of the bar at the Perry Hotel. The second shows the main hall in the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library. Vitrolite was used for interior and exterior designs in commercial, public, and private buildings in the 1930s and 1940s. The product was intended to give buildings a sleek, modern look, and epitomized the Art Deco-Moderne style. It was used extensively throughout the country, especially in commercial buildings such as store fronts, diners, and movie theaters. In 1883, Edward Drummond Libbey (1854-1925) inherited the New England Glass Works from his father. Within a few years, Libbey recognized that the Massachusetts factory could not survive unless it relocated. Libbey looked at several sites in the Midwest, but Toledo's location and resources gave it an edge over the other towns. In addition, Toledo could offer Libbey's workers many amenities, including a school system, libraries, and musical organizations. In 1895 Libbey established the Toledo Glass Company with Michael J. Owens (1859-1923). The company produced the first semi-automatic glass-blowing machine, which Owens invented. In 1912, the Toledo Glass Company purchased the patents from the Colburn Machine Glass Company to make sheet glass. In 1916, the company reorganized as the Libbey-Owens Sheet Glass Company. In 1930, the company merged with the Edward Ford Plate Glass Company to form Libbey-Owens-Ford.
