Description	These items document the first commencement at Urbana University in 1854. The "First Annual Commencement in the Urbana University" program lists the schedule of activities, which included readings of student works and an afternoon meeting on the state of the university. A corresponding article in the Messenger discusses the ceremony, which included speeches, church services, and demonstrations by students. Both items are included in a scrapbook of commencement materials which is approximately 25 pages long and measures 7" x 8.5" (17.8 x 20.32 cm). In 1850, the New Church established Urbana University in Urbana, Ohio. Upon the advice of John Chapman (better known as Johnny Appleseed), a Swedenborgian missionary, Colonel John James donated the land for the school. Swedenborgians are followers of Swedish philosopher Emanuel Swedenborg (1668-1772), who hoped to provide a new sense of understanding of the Bible and religion through his writings. Swedenborg's followers established the New Church, to mark the new era in history when religion could be understood and used in a practical way.
