. The
Hocking
stream
that
flows
through
the
valley
south
of
Carroll
was
called
Hock-Hocking
by the
American
Indians
.
Lloyd
Mignerey
purchased
but
did
not
send
this
postcard
, as
is
noted
on the
back
"

Reverend
Lloyd
B
.
Mignerey
(1896-1988)
was
born
in
Mowrystown
,
Ohio
. He
graduated
from
Otterbein
College
in
1917
, then
enlisted
in the
U
.
S
.
Army
.
During
World
War
I
he
served
in the
Medical
Corps
and
drove
an
ambulance
in
France
.
Following
the
war
he
studied
at the
Sorbonne
briefly
before
returning
to the
United
States
. He
served
as the
field
secretary
for the
Anti-Saloon
League
of
America
until
the
18th
amendment
,
which
prohibited
the
sale
of
alcohol
, was
passed
. He
married
Ruth
Phillips
on
September
11
,
1921
. In
December
of the
same
year
they
departed
for
missionary
work
in
Sierra
Leone
,
where
they
served
until
1924
. In
Sierra
Leona
he
became
acting
principal
of
Albert
Academy
and
became
an
avid
supporter
of the
movement
for
one
universal
language
,
Esperanto
. In
1926
, he was
ordained
into the
ministry
; he
served
in
United
Brethren
churches
in
Lancaster
,
Chillicothe
, and
Jackson
.
Mignerey
obtained
his
private
pilot's
license
in
1940
and
enlisted
in the
Air
Force
as a "
Sky
Pilot
"
chaplain
in
1942
. He
remained
in
military
service
throughout
World
War
II
and the
Korean
conflict
.
When
he
returned
to
civilian
life
in
1955
he
became
editor
for the
Temperance
Education
Foundation
in
Westerville
,
Ohio
until
he
retired
in
1964
.
