Description
On
July
11
,
1883
, the
Union
of
American
Hebrew
Congregations
held
a
banquet
in
Cincinnati
to
honor
the
first
ordination
class
of
Hebrew
Union
College
.
Some
believe
that the
dinner
, the
menu
for
which
included
non-kosher
food
, was
one
of the
events
that
precipitated
a
split
between
Reform
and
Conservative
branches
of
Judaism
.
After
the
split
, this
graduation
banquet
menu
became
known
as "
Trefa
" or
forbidden
. The
four-page
menu
measures
7.6
by
10.6
inches
(19.3
by
26.92
cm)
.
Reform
Judaism
,
which
began
in
Cincinnati
under
the
leadership
of
Isaac
Mayer
Wise
in the
second
half
of the
nineteenth
century
, was a
modernizing
movement
to
adapt
Judaism
to
American
culture
. The
emphasis
in
Reform
was on the
ethical
message
of
Judaism
; for
many
years
ritual
practice
was not
emphasized
. In
contrast
,
Conservative
Judaism
holds
that
Jewish
law
is
central
to
Jewish
life
.
It
also
brings
to
tradition
a
historical
consciousness
and
awareness
of how
Judaism
has
changed
in
response
to
circumstances
,
making
future
change
possible
.
Modern
Orthodox
Judaism
adheres
to
traditional
Jewish
faith
,
such
as
belief
in the
divine
origins
of the
Torah
and
traditional
Jewish
ritual
practices
, and
attempts
to
synthesize
Jewish
tradition
with
modern
culture
and
ideas
.
Rabbi
Isaac
Wise
founded
the
Union
of
American
Hebrew
Congregations
founded
in
1873
in
Cincinnati
,
which
at the
time
had
one
of the
largest
Jewish
populations
in the
United
States
.
Two
years
later
,
Wise
established
Hebrew
Union
College
in
Cincinnati
, the
first
Jewish
institution
of
higher
learning
in the
nation
. The
college
,
now
called
Hebrew
Union
College-Jewish
Institute
of
Religion
, has
branches
in
Los
Angeles
,
New
York
, and
Jerusalem
.
