Description	Wilbur Wright wrote this one-page letter to B.O. Hanby on Wright Cycle Company letterhead. In the letter Wright thanks Hanby for his letter and discusses family news. The letter measures 8.5" by 11" (21.59 by 27.94 cm). B.O. Hanby was the son of Benjamin Hanby (1833-1867), composer of "Darling Nelly Gray" which Hanby wrote in 1856 while attending Otterbein College in Westerville, and "Santa Claus, or Up on the House Top." Aviator Wilbur Wright (1867-1912) was born near New Castle, Indiana in 1867. His parents named him after clergyman Wilbur Fiske. The Wright family moved permanently to Dayton in 1884. Four years older than his brother Orville, but four and a half years younger than his brother Lorin, Wilbur was middle child of the family. Wilbur attended Richmond High School in Indiana, but did not graduate because the family moved back to Dayton. A hockey accident left Wilbur severely ill for more than a year and dashed his plans for college. Wilbur began working in the printing business with his brother Orville in Dayton, and they later shifted the business to the repair and manufacture of bicycles. Fascinated by the glider flight of Octo Lilienthal, Wilbur and Orville read everything they could find about aeronautics. They tested their first glider at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina in 1900 and on December 17, 1903 became the first to fly a heavier-than-air craft. The brothers continued testing at Huffman Prairie in Dayton, and in France, Italy, and England. A Wright airplane was purchased by the Army in 1909 and the brothers began the Wright Company to manufacture private planes. Wilbur Wright died of typhoid fever in Dayton in 1912.

Full Text	[written on letterhead of the Wright Cycle Company] January 27 1906 Mr. B.O. Hanby, Dear Sir. I have your very kind letter Of 21st inst. If I remember correctly you were staying at Billheimer's when we moved back to Dayton in 1884. Orville and I were only boys then and you probably remember only our older brothers Reuchlin and Lorin. Reuchlin married Lulu Billheimer and Lorin married Netta Stokes. Neither Orville nor myself are married. I meet Charles Bedell now and then, but have not seen Mrs. Bedell for a long time.
