Description	This volume of essays, mathematical problems, and other student work was compiled by students at Wilberforce University for display at the 1893 World's Columbian Exhibition in Chicago. The volume is approximately 300 pages in length and measures 9" x 12" (22.86 x 30.48 cm). Selections digitized here include an essay titled "Wilberforce Ball-Game" by George A. Bailey of Xenia, and a page of student examples of proper letter-writing. The World's Columbian Exposition, or World's Fair, celebrated the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' discovery of the American continent. The exposition highlighted new technological inventions, celebrated the growth and expansion of the United States and offered an entertainment on the Midway. One of every four people in the United States traveled to Chicago for 1893 Exposition. The Cincinnati Conference of the Methodist Episcopal (M.E.) Church appointed a committee to select a site for an institution of higher learning for African Americans in 1853. The committee purchased Tawawa Springs, a summer resort near Xenia in Greene County, and established Wilberforce University. The founding principle of the school declared that "There should never be any distinction among trustees, faculty, or students on account of race, creed or color."
