Description	This letter was written to J. F. Orr, chairman of the Greene County Homecoming celebration, by Whitelaw Reid. Reid explains that previous obligations will keep him from attending the homecoming. He goes on to say that he is proud of Xenia and Greene County, and wishes them luck with the homecoming. The letter is three pages and measures 8" x 10" (20.32 x 25.40 cm). Born near Xenia, Whitelaw Reid (1837-1912) graduated from Miami University of Ohio in 1856. He was a correspondent during the Civil War for Horace Greeley's Cincinnati Gazette. In 1868 Greeley made him managing editor of the New York Tribune, and after his death, Reid gained financial and editorial control. Reid served as minister to France from 1889 to 1892, ran as the vice presidential candidate with Benjamin Harrison in 1892, and was ambassador to Great Britain from 1905 until his death in 1912. In 1906 it was noted that there were a number of former citizens Of Xenia, Ohio, who had achieved success. The 1908 Greene County Homecoming event was suggested by Russell F. Greiner, then living in Kansas City, Missouri, in a conversation with J. F. Orr, then president of the Commercial Club. The Commercial Club appointed a committee of fifty to plan the event, chaired by postmaster Orr. The homecoming was held in Xenia from August 30 to September 2, 1908. Sunday, August 30th was Church Day, August 31st was Reception Day, September 1st was Military Day and September 2nd was Gala-Historic Day, which included a parade. The festivities concluded with a grand ball.
