Description	This catalog documents the curriculum, rules, and regulations of Wilberforce University for the 1859-1860 school year. Wilberforce became the first African American owned and operated institution of higher learning in 1856. The catalog is 26 pages and measures 6" x 9" (15.24 x 22.86 cm). Pages 1, 2, 7-26 are included here, and include sections on coursework, expenses, and regulations. Also included is an essay on the history of the university by Reverend John F. Wright. The Cincinnati Conference of the Methodist Episcopal (M.E.) Church appointed a committee to select a site for an institution of higher learning for African Americans in 1853. The committee purchased Tawawa Springs, a summer resort near Xenia in Greene County, and established Wilberforce University. The founding principle of the school declared that "There should never be any distinction among trustees, faculty, or students on account of race, creed or color." Wilberforce University ran into financial difficulties during the Civil War and was purchased by Bishop Daniel A. Payne of the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church for $10,000 in 1863. Payne then sold Union Seminary, which had been created by the A.M.E. Church in 1844 near Columbus, and moved its students and faculty to the Wilberforce campus. Under the direction of the A.M.E. Church, Wilberforce University consisted of two departments, the Theological Department, funded exclusively by the A.M.E. Church, and the Collegiate Department, funded by the A.M.E. Church and philanthropic contributions. In 1887 the Ohio Legislature funded a third department, the Combined Normal and Industrial Department.
