became
the
first
African
American
owned
and
operated
institution
of
higher
learning
in
1856
. The
catalog
is

essay
on the
history

university
by
Reverend

Wright

Cincinnati
Conference
of the
Methodist
Episcopal
(M.E.)
Church
appointed
a
committee
to
select
a
site
for an
institution
of
higher
learning
for
African
Americans
in
1853
. The
committee
purchased
Tawawa
Springs
, a
summer
resort
near
Xenia
in
Greene
County
, and
established
Wilberforce
University
. The
founding
principle
of the
school
declared
that "There should
never
be any
distinction
among
trustees
,
faculty
, or
students
on
account
of
race
,
creed
or
color.
"
Wilberforce
University
ran
into
financial
difficulties
during
the
Civil
War
and was
purchased
by
Bishop
Daniel
A.
Payne
of the
African
Methodist
Episcopal
(A.M.E.)
Church
for
$10,000
in
1863
.
Payne
then
sold
Union
Seminary
,
which
had been
created
by the
A.M.E
.
Church
in
1844
near
Columbus
, and
moved
its
students
and
faculty
to the
Wilberforce
campus
.
Under
the
direction
of the
A.M.E
.
Church
,
Wilberforce
University
consisted
of
two
departments
, the
Theological
Department
,
funded
exclusively
by the
A.M.E
.
Church
, and the
Collegiate
Department
,
funded
by the
A.M.E
.
Church
and
philanthropic
contributions
. In
1887
the
Ohio
Legislature
funded
a
third
department
, the
Combined
Normal
and
Industrial
Department
.
