Magnolia Sept. 16. 1841. 
My Dear Sisters, Brothers & Friends 
One week Since I 
left home & this is the third letter. The natural inference 
might be that my heart is yet upon my loved home if 
my little form is not there.   I will not pretend to de- 
ny it- the Strength of affection is proved [crossed out] tested, Strongly so 
by Separation-& my thoughts by night & day prove to me 
that nought on earth is so dear as my own home & its 
loved inmates.   Think not by this that I am unhappy. 
If you could See me Scouting o'er the hills-making 
acquaintance with all who come in contact with me- 
you would not think me brokenhearted exactly. 
To day, I am acting as clerk in Mr. Croxtons store 
the clerk is absent & I have offered my Services 
wh. are accepted- & the counter is my table- perhaps 
after Some experience here- I may be able to pro- 
cure a place as clerk at home. 
Well  I suppose you wish to know what 
success I have in my pilgrimage- how prospered 
&c.  Teusday morn. I started with Mrs. Croxtons little 
boy- went to Dr. Emery's- an Uncle of hers- brother to 
the Emery's of Madison- & he went with me to Lees- 
burg.  We called there a few minutes- told them I was 
the person that Miss Smith had Sent there- & then 
we went to Hagarstown- Spent the night there- in the 
[running vertically up the left hand side of the page] 
They were quite since at Leesburg- but if any thing happened to prevent my going there- they 
were to let me know Saturday- if I receive no message will go there the last of next 
week commence on Monday the 28 of Sept.  If you & Lindsley think I had better go 
on with him- 
let him bring
