Description
This
field
desk
belonged
to
Captain
William
Holden
of
Marietta
. The
desk
was
presented
to him by the
soldiers
with
whom
he
served
at
Newberne
,
North
Carolina
in
1863
.
It
contains
various
drawers
and
compartments
.
One
side
could
be
opened
for
use
as a
writing
surface
.
When
closed
, the
locked
desk
could
be
easily
carried
. In
1908
,
Captain
Holden
presented
the
desk
to his
grandchild
.
It
measures
23.75
by
11.5
by
16.25
inches
(60.32
by
29.21
by
41.27
cm)
.
William
Holden
was
born
in
Marietta
in
1839
. He was a
student
at
Marietta
College
when
the
Civil
War
broke
out
. He
left
school
and
enlisted
in
Company
B
of the
18th
Ohio
Volunteer
Infantry
(O.V.I.)
in
April
1861
. In
September
, he
joined
the
2nd
Virginia
Cavalry
and
served
as
lieutenant
and
quartermaster
of the
1st
Battalion
until
March
1862
. He
enlisted
again
in
June
of
1862
as
captain
and
assistant
quartermaster
of the
9th
Army
Corps
until
April
20
,
1866
.
Holden
returned
to
Marietta
and
served
as
librarian
of
Marietta
College
from
1872-1874
. The
college
granted
him the
degree
of
M
. A. in
1873
. His
service
at the
college
continued
when
he was
elected
treasurer
in
1876
.
Holden
again
worked
as
librarian
from
1878-1881
. He
moved
to
Cincinnati
in
1881
and
worked
in a
bookstore
and a
carriage
company
before
becoming
librarian
at the
Lloyd
Scientific
Library
in
Cincinnati
. He
died
in
1913
and
is
buried
in
Cincinnati
.
