Description	Three photographs show a large crowd gathered in front of the Defiance County Courthouse to hear President William Howard Taft give a brief campaign speech on May 18, 1912. He lost his bid for re-election to Democrat Woodrow Wilson. The photographs measure 12" x 3.75" (30.48 x 9.53 cm). Edward Bronson (1873-1965) was a three-term mayor of Defiance, managed the local opera house, and was involved in numerous civic associations. In addition, he was an amateur photographer who recorded daily life in Defiance. The Edward Bronson Photograph Collection consists of 798 photographic prints created by Bronson between 1906 and 1949. The collection is housed at the Defiance Public Library. Copy prints are available at the Center for Archival Collections, Bowling Green State University. Taft (1857-1930), the twenty-seventh president of the United States, accepted his party's nomination for the presidency from the front lawn of his half-brother's home, now the Taft Museum of Art. Prior to that time, Taft was a lawyer in his native Cincinnati and in 1904 had been appointed secretary of war by President Theodore Roosevelt. Following his presidency, Taft become chief justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, the only president to achieve this distinction.
