Air

printed
logbook
contains
humorous
cartoons
and
photographs
of
training
activities
.
Airman
First
Class
Pitsenbarger
graduated
from
jump
school
at
Hamilton
Air
Force
Base
in
California
on
June
14
,
1963
to
become
a
U.S.A.F
.
Para-Rescue
jumper
. The
four
last
pages
are a
handwritten
record
of
Pitsenbarger's
jumps
from
June
1963-May
1965
,
noting
the
date
,
aircraft
,
type
of
jump
,
altitude
, and
remarks
. On
April
11
,
1966
, as he
approached
his
300th
combat
mission
during
his
service
in
Vietnam
,
Pitsenbarger
was
called
upon
to
rescue
and
treat
the
wounds
of the
U.S
.
Army's
1st
Division
,
which
was
pinned
down
under
fire
in a
Viet
Cong
ambush
. He was
lowered
through
the
trees
by
cable
from a
helicopter
overhead
; he
attended
the
wounded
and
lifted
six
men
to
safety
.
When
the
helicopter
came
under
enemy
fire
, he
elected
to
stay
on the
ground
. He
continued
to
treat
the
wounded
and
hold
back
the
enemy
until
he was
fatally
wounded
by
Viet
Cong
snipers
. For his
bravery
and
sacrifice
, he was
posthumously
awarded
the
Medal
of
Honor
in a
ceremony
on
December
8
,
2000
.
