postcard
features
a
photograph
of
portion
of the
house
in
Niles
,
Ohio
in
which
William
McKinley
was
born
. The
home
originally
stood
on
Main
Street
in
downtown
Niles
. In the
late
1890s
,
part
of the
house
was
moved
to
Franklin
Alley
and
occupied
by the
Harris
Automatic
Press
Company
from
1895-1904
.
It
was
later
used
by a
local
undertaker
for
storage
.
Another
part
of the
house
was
relocated
to an
area
southwest
of
downtown
called
Riverside
Park
.
Niles
brothers
Charles
and
Albert
Harris
invented
the
first
high-speed
automatic-feed
printing
press
, and were
responsible
for
other
printing
innovations
during
the
early
1900s
. Their
small
company
grew
into the
Harris
Corporation
, a
multi-million-dollar
international
communications
equipment
company
. The
men
in the
photograph
are
likely
Harris
employees
. The
postcard
appears
to be
part
of
set
commissioned
by
Lulu
Mackey-Wess
and
sold
to
raise
funds
. By
1910
,
Mrs
.
Mackey-Wess
had
purchased
both
structures
and
eventually
had them
rejoined
and
restored
on her
property
east
of
Niles
; this
area
then
became
known
as
McKinley
Heights
.
After
her
death
in
1934
, the
house
was
neglected
and
later
burned
to the
ground
on
April
3
,
1937
. A
replica
of
McKinley's
birth
home
, the
McKinley
Birthplace
Home
and
Research
Center
,
is
now
at the
original
location
on
Main
Street
.
William
McKinley
(1843-1901)
, the
twenty-fifth
president
of the
United
States
, was
born
in
Niles
,
Ohio
. He
enlisted
in the
army
at the
outbreak
of the
Civil
War
and,
after
being
mustered
out
,
studied
law
and
opened
a
law
office
in
Canton
,
Ohio
.
McKinley
served
in the
U.S
.
Congress
for
14
years
, and
became
president
in
1897
,
largely
due
to the
influence
of
Marcus
Hanna
,
boss
of the
Cleveland
political
machine
.
McKinley
was
most
noted
for his
foreign
policy
and the
conduct
of the
Spanish-American
War
in
1898
.
It
was
during
McKinley's
administration
that the
U.S
.
acquired
its
first
overseas
possessions
in the
Philippines
,
Guam
, and
Puerto
Rico
. He was
re-elected
in
1900
, but was
assassinated
by
anarchist
Leon
Czolgosz
in
1901
. His
running
mate
,
Theodore
Roosevelt
, then
became
president
.
