Description
This
wood
clamp
and
mallet
were
donated
to the
United
States
Air
Force
Museum
by the
estate
of
Orville
Wright
in
1949
. They
make
up
part
of a
larger
collection
of
tools
and
equipment
donated
to the
museum
that were
used
in the
Wright
Brothers
'
bicycle
shop
. The
Wright
Brothers
were
using
these
tools
as
early
as
1900
for
projects
at their
bicycle
shop
. The
clamp
,
shown
in the
first
image
,
is
approximately
8
"
x
12
"
(20.32
x
30.48
cm)
. The
second
image
shows
the
mallet
,
which
is
approximately
12
"
x
4
"
(30.48
x
10.16
cm)
. As
young
men
Orville
and
Wilbur
Wright
became
interested
in
aviation
.
After
studying
data
from the
inventors
of the
past
like
Otto
Lilienthal
and
Octave
Chanute
the
Wright
Brothers
applied
their
incredible
ingenuity
to
testing
and
fashioning
the
first
powered
heavier-than-air
aircraft
. They also
operated
a
bicycle
sales
and
repair
shop
in
West
Dayton
,
Ohio
. On
December
17
,
1903
the
Wright
Brothers
'
first
powered
flyer
soared
into the
air
at
Kitty
Hawk
,
North
Carolina
, with
Orville
at the
controls
. This
success
was
met
with
some
skepticism
in
scientific
circles
. The
Wrights
themselves
would not
offer
any
information
on the
flyer
until
they had
received
a
patent
. They
continued
to
modify
the
design
of the
flyers
,
testing
them at
Huffman
Prairie
in
Dayton
until
1905
.
Legally
patented
in
1906
, the
Wright
Brothers
began
marketing
their
new
invention
. They
first
offered
it
to the
U
.
S
.
government
, but
it
was not
until
the
Wrights
had
become
celebrities
in
Europe
while
exhibiting
their
aircraft
for
foreign
dignitaries
that the
U
.
S
.
government
took
note
.
Military
tests
of the
flyer
began
in
1908
and
continued
in
1909
,
when
the
aircraft
was
accepted
for
military
service
.
Wilbur
Wright
died
in
1912
,
leaving
Orville
to
fight
numerous
patent-infringement
lawsuits
over
the
next
decade
.
Orville
lived
in
Dayton
and
experimented
in his
laboratory
until
his
death
in
1948
.
