This
green
vinyl
bookbag
with
black
woven
handles
is
one
of
many
that
students
used
to
transport
books
and
supplies
after
the
Xenia
tornado
of
1974
.
Four
Xenia
city
schools
were
either
destroyed
or
so
severely
damaged
that
students
and
teachers
had to be
temporarily
relocated
.
Neighboring
school
districts
generously
offered
the
use
of their
facilities
at the
completion
of their
school
day
. This
bag
,
which
measures
14.75
"
x
14
"
(37.47
x
35.56
cm)
, was
used
by
Ruth
Anderson
, a
teacher
at
Shawnee
School
in
Xenia
. The
Xenia
tornado
touched
down
at
4:30
p.m
. on
June
3
,
1974
,
nine
miles
southwest
of the
city
.
It
was the
deadliest
and
most
destructive
of
148
tornadoes
reported
in
13
states
on
June
3
and
4
.
Thirty-two
people
were
killed
in the
area
between
Xenia
and
Wilberforce
University
;
1,300
people
were
treated
at
Greene
Memorial
hospital
and
85
were
admitted
for
treatment
from
injuries
sustained
during
the
storm
.
Half
the
buildings
in
Xenia
were
damaged
by the
tornado
and
300
homes
were
destroyed
,
mostly
newer
houses
that
did
not have
basements
.
Seven
of
twelve
local
schools
were
damaged
or
destroyed
.
Ohio
Governor
John
Gilligan
and
President
Richard
Nixon
toured
the
disaster
area
on
Monday
,
April
8
,
1974
.
National
Guard
troops
assisted
with the
cleanup
, and
within
a
year
nearly
eighty
percent
of the
homes
and
forty
percent
of
businesses
were
rebuilt
. By
1980
, a
shopping
plaza
,
Xenia
Towne
Square
,
replaced
a
large
block
in the
city's
center
.
