signed
by
Armstrong
authenticating
event
. The
1903
Wright
Flyer
was the
first
successful
powered
aircraft
. The
Apollo
11
spacecraft
made
the
first
manned
mission
to the
moon
.
It
consisted
of the
Columbia
command
module
and the
Eagle
lunar
module
.
Buzz
Aldrin
,
Michael
Collins
, and
Neil
Armstrong
composed
the
crew
.
Mission
Commander
Armstrong
was the
first
man
to
exit
the
lunar
module
and
walk
on the
surface
of the
moon
.
Wapakoneta
native
Armstrong
(born
1930)
earned
his
pilot's
license
at
age
16
and
attended
college
at
Purdue
University
,
studying
aeronautical
engineering
. He was
called
away
from
college
to
serve
his
country
during
the
Korean
War
and
flew
78
combat
missions
for the
United
States
Navy
.
Following
the
war
he
finished
his
degree
and
became
an
aeronautical
research
pilot
for the
National
Aeronautics
and
Space
Administration
(NASA)
. In
1962
he was
selected
as the
first
civilian
astronaut
and
served
as the
command
pilot
for the
Gemini
8
space
mission
.
