the
first
edition
of
O
.
Henry's
first
book
and
only
novel
,
Cabbages
and
Kings
,
dating
from
1904
. The
book
,
which
deals
with
events
and
characters
in a
Central
American
republic
,
is
344
pages
long
and
measures

x

cm)
. The
first
thirteen
pages
are
shown
here.
William
Sidney
Porter
(1862-1910)
on was
born
in
North
Carolina
. He
is
much
better
known
under
his
pen
name
"
O
.
Henry.
" In
1891
he
became
a
teller
with the
First
National
Bank
in
Austin
. In
1894
money
was
found
missing
from the
bank
.
O
.
Henry
fled
to
Honduras
, but
later
returned
to
Austin
because
of his
wife's
deteriorating
health
. In
early
1898
he was
found
guilty
of
theft
and
sentenced
to
five
years
in the
Ohio
Penitentiary
in
Columbus
,
Ohio
.
While
in the
penitentiary
,
O
.
Henry
started
to
write
short
stories
to
earn
money
to
support
his
daughter
.
After
serving
three
years
of his
five-year
sentence
, he
emerged
from the
Ohio
Penitentiary
as "
O
.
Henry
" to
help
shield
his
true
identity
. He
moved
to
New
York
City
,
where
over
the
next
ten
years
he
published
more
than
300
stories
before
his
death
from
cirrhosis
of the
liver
.
