Two
letters

Philander
Chase's
autobiography
relate
to his
move
from
Hartford
,
Connecticut
to
Worthington
,
Ohio
in
1817
. The
first
volume
of
Chase's
autobiography
, in
which
these
letters
appear
,
is
548
pages
and
measures
approximately
4.4
by
5
inches
(11.18
by
12.70
cm)
. The
first
letter
,
written
by
Chase
to his
oldest
son
George
in
Vermont
,
tells
of his
travels
throughout
the
state
to
perform
his
duties
as an
Episcopal
priest
. He also
relates
that he
agreed
to
serve
as
rector
at
churches
in
Worthington
,
Columbus
, and
Delaware
and
principal
of the
Worthington
academy
.
Soon
after
arriving
in
Worthington
,
Chase
purchased
land
in the
town
and a
farm
nearby
. The
second
letter
, from
Philander
Chase's
wife
Mary
Fay
Chase
to a
friend
in
Hartford
,
chronicles
her
six-week
journey
by
covered
wagon
and
packet
ship
from
Connecticut
to
Worthington
. She
describes
Worthington
and the
towns
she
passed
along
the
way
.
Mary
Chase
died
of
consumption
(tuberculosis)
in
1818
.
Philander
Chase
was
born
in
1775
in
Cornish
,
New
Hampshire
.
Although
raised
in the
Congregational
Church
,
while
studying
at
Dartmouth
College
he
decided
to
join
the
Episcopal
Church
,
which
split
from the
Church
of
England
during
the
American
Revolution
.
Chase
spent
much
of his
career
expanding
the
denomination's
reach
in
frontier
areas
,
first
in
Louisiana
, then
Ohio
,
Michigan
, and
Illinois
. In
1818
he was
appointed
bishop
of the
newly-created
Diocese
of
Ohio
.
Chase
was also a
leader
in
education
,
founding
two
Episcopal
seminaries
,
Kenyon
College
in
Gambier
,
Ohio
and
Jubilee
College
in
Illinois
. He
died
in
1852
. His
nephew
,
Salmon
P
.
Chase
(1808-1873)
,
served
as
U.S
.
Senator
,
Ohio
governor
,
secretary
of the
treasury
, and
chief
justice
of the
supreme
court
.
