Description	This 8.5" x 11" (21.6 x 27.9 cm) teaching certificate was awarded to Albert B. Graham in 1885. Albert B. Graham (1868-1960), the founder of 4-H, was born on a farm near Lena, Ohio in Champaign County. With his mother and sister he moved to Lena after his father's death in a house fire in 1879. Graham graduated from Lena-Conover High School in 1885 and attended the National Normal School in Lebanon, Ohio where he received a bachelor of science degree. He continued his studies at the Ohio State University and received his teaching certificate in 1890. For the next decade, Graham taught in rural schools in Champaign, Miami, and Shelby Counties. As superintendent of school in Springfield Township, Clark County, he organized a Boys' and Girls' Agriculture Experiment Club in 1902. Within the first year, nearly eighty-five students joined. As superintendent of Agriculture Extension at the Ohio State University, Graham continued his work educating rural youths. He worked for the Federal Extension Service from 1919 to 1938. He retired to Clintonville, Ohio, where he resided until his death in 1960.

Full Text	No. COPY OF CERTIFICATE From the Board of School Examiners of Champaign County, Ohio. [illustration] The undersigned School Examiners of Champaing County, O. having examined Albert B. Graham hereby certify that he possesses an adequate knowledge of the theory and practice of teaching, and is quali= fied to teach Orthography, Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, Geography, English Grammar and U.S. History, [line] and that he has furnished satisfactory evidence of good Moral Character This Certificate to be valid 12 months after date. Given at Urbana, Ohio, and dated this 27th, day of June one thousand eight hundred and eighty five, A.C. Denet F.J. Fuson M. J. Martz School Examiners Champaign County, Ohio. Remarks.- Examinations will be held (commencing at 9 A.M.) on the last Saturday of each month, and on every Saturday in March and March and September. Citizen and Gazette Print.
