Description	Charles D. Gamble of Allen County, Ohio used these items during the Spanish-American War. Shown here is Gamble's campaign hat, canteen, haversack marked "2-L-US-46" cup, and mess kit. These items are typical of those issued to enlisted men during the war. The campaign hat and mess kit measure approximately 8.5" x 6.5" (21.6 x 16.51 cm). The canteen and tin cup are roughly 4.5" x 4.5" (11.43 x 11.43 cm), while the haversack, a type of backpack, is 11.5" x 11" (29.21 x 27.9 cm). Born in Middlepoint, Ohio, Gamble attended Spencerville High School in Allen County before going to Vanderbilt University and Jefferson Medical School to receive his medical degree in 1905. Gamble was a student at Puget Sound University when the Spanish-American War began in 1898. He returned to Ohio and enlisted in Company L of the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry (O.V.I.). Lieutenant Colonel Gamble did not see action during the Spanish American War. Gamble later served as a major in the Medical Corps in World War I. He died in Lima on March 18, 1931.
