Description	This travel journal, penned by Charity Rotch, describes a 4-month trip through Pennsylvania and southern Ohio in the winter of 1811. Charity and and her husband Thomas Rotch, originally of Massachusetts and Connecticut, were wealthy Quakers who decided to move to Ohio in order to raise Merino sheep. In search of available land for purchase, they traveled through large and small towns in Pennsylvania and Ohio. In her journal, Charity Rotch describes the conditions of travel, meetings with people, and environmental conditions, including flora and fauna encountered on their journey. The travel journal is 53 pages and measures 12.5 by 7.5 inches (31.75 x 19.05 cm). After reaching Cincinnati, Thomas and Charity Rotch turned north and traveled to Columbus, Cambridge, and Steubenville. At Steubenville, Thomas Rotch met Bezaleel Wells, who sold Rotch several hundred acres of good arable land in the area of present-day Massillon. The Rotches returned to Connecticut in 1811 and in 1812 returned to the Massillon area, where Thomas Rotch established the town of Kendal in 1813.
