Description	These two letters deal with the admission of children to the Charity School of Kendal (now Massillon), one of Ohio's first vocational schools. In the first letter, J.M. Allen of the Charity School writes to Mrs. Hitchcock of Akron, informing her that a boy of 12 whom she wishes to enroll in the school will require a court-appointed guardian. The guardian will be responsible for ensuring that the boy remains in school during his four-year term at Kendal. Allen writes that the perspective student must also be of sound body and mind with good habits and have no means otherwise of obtaining an education. The one-page letter and measures 5" x 8" (12.7 x 20.32 cm). A second letter from D. Dowd of Seville, Ohio asks that an orphan, Clarence A. Taggart, be admitted to Charity School of Kendal. =The boy was on his way to the school. The note is one page and measures 4.5" x 7" (11.43 x 17.8 cm). Upon the deaths of Thomas and Charity Rotch in 1823 and 1824 respectively, the bulk of their estate went to further a dream of Charity's. She called for the establishment of a school for orphans and poor children, "that they be trained up in the habits of industry and economy." The Charity School of Kendal operated from 1829 to 1906, educating more than 500 children. The school was located on present-day State Street in Massillon, at the southeast corner of the present Ninth Street North East. The Rotch-Wales Collection comprises several thousand items, including Quaker and abolitionist materials, household remedies and recipes, weather reports and machinery plans, and personal letters of Thomas and Charity Rotch and their family. It contains personal and business correspondence, diaries, documents, accounts, ledgers, and daybooks. A large portion of the collection consists of the personal and business correspondence, documents, and business papers of Arvine Wales I (1785-1854), who accompanied Rotch from Hartford to Ohio in 1811, worked for him, and carried on Rotch's business interests after his death.

Full Text	[corresponds to page 1 of letter from P.M. Allen to Mrs. Hitchcock Regarding Admission to Charity School] Massillon Feb. 3d 1862 Mrs Hitchcock Your letter of Jan. 26th was duly received. After consulting with one of the Board of Directors, I write to inform you that if the boy is twelve years old, of Sound body & mind and good habits & has no other means of obtaining good educational advantages, he can choose a guardian who will become responsible for his remaining in the School during his term of four years from next June & the School will admit him whenever his guardian brings him down- He will have to go before the probate Judge there [carrot mark] at [above carrot mark] Akron to choose & have his guardian qualified. You can act as his guardian as well as any one- Respectfully yours P.M. Allen
