[corresponds to page 1 of Charles Collins Letter to Thomas Rotch Regarding Cotton]
Esteemed Friend New York the first day of the
Thomas Rotch fourth month 1812
Having understood there was a private
opportunity to the State of Ohio I use the freedom to
enquire of thee whether Cotton is raised among you in
considerable quantities. Almy L Brown of Providence
intimated to me that could they get Stock clear of Slavery
they would give it the preference. There are several
friends in want of Cotton manufactures free from
said difficulty, and the concern I think is spreading
among us.
Some Coffee,Sugar,Molasses & Rice to supply such
persons, and wish them to be obtained in our territory if
posible, at present my supplies are from Hayti and
South America. Shouldst thou be possessed of
any useful information on this subject it will
be kindly received by
Thy assured friend
Charles Collins
The amounts of Richard's embarrasment are painful
to Maria's friends, they would gladly recieve more
pleasing information.
