Description	Mathias Armbruster drew these 9.58 by 7.61-inch (24.33 by 19.32 cm) sketches during his service in the Civil War. The first drawing is of soldier on picket duty at Flat Top Mountain in West Virginia. On the back of the same page is a drawing of Flat Top Mountain. The top half of the second drawing contains an illustration of Parkersburg, West Virginia, while the lower portion is labeled "camp [illegible] Shepherdstown n. harpers ferry 7 miles [illegible] Potomac." On the opposite side, the top half of the paper is a sketch marked "south mountains Mittletown" possibly referring to Middletown, Virginia. The illustration on the bottom half of the paper bears the caption "camp [illegible] harpers ferry n. Sharpsburg." Armbruster used some German words in his captions. Armbruster (1839-1920) was born in Wurttemburg, Germany and studied art in his native country and Paris before immigrating to the United States. He arrived in Cincinnati and worked as an art-glass painter and theatrical designer. Armbruster enlisted in the 28th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (O.V.I.) at the outbreak of the Civil War and saw action at Bull Run and Antietam. After the war, Armbruster settled in Columbus, where he worked as a portrait painter and established the Armbruster Scenic Studio in 1875. During the late nineteenth century it was associated with a number of the most popular touring theatre companies in America among which were Al G. Field, Modjeska, Robert Mantell, and the Hanford-Tyler-MacLean companies. As specialists catering to the needs of traveling productions, the Armbruster studio became one of the largest scenic studios in America. Scenery designed by Armbruster was seen all over the United States, including New York City. These sketches are part of a large collection of Armbruster material held by the Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee Theatre Research Institute at The Ohio State University.
