two
oil-on-canvas
portraits
are of
husband
and
wife
Charles
Phelps
Taft
and
Anna
Sinton
Taft
. They were
painted
during
the
last
weeks
of
1902
by the
Spanish
painter
Raimundo
de
Madrazo
Garreta
.
Both
portraits
measure
approximately
49
"
x
38
"
(124.46
x
96.52
cm)
.
During
their
56-year
marriage
,
Charles
Phelps
Taft
(1843-1929)
and
Anna
Sinton
Taft
(1852
circa-1931)
left
an
indelible
stamp
on
Cincinnati's
artistic
and
civic
life
. They
bequeathed
their
house
and
art
collection
consisting
of
nearly
700
examples
of
Old
Master
paintings
,
Chinese
porcelains
, and
European
decorative
arts
to the
people
of
Cincinnati
. In
1932
, their
residence
opened
as a
public
museum
administered
by the
Cincinnati
Institute
of
Fine
Arts
. The
Tafts
helped
save
the
neighborhood
around
their
home
from
industrial
and
commercial
development
. They
developed
Lytle
Park
as a
playground
,
built
the
Anna
Louise
Inn
for
young
workingwomen
, the
rectory
for
Christ
Church
Cathedral
, the
University
Club
, and the
Phelps
Apartment
building
. They
bought
the
historic
house
that they
leased
to the
Literary
Club
for
99
years
at
one
dollar
per
year
,
renewable
forever
.
Charles
Taft
was
publisher
of the
Times-Star
newspaper
and
served
on
many
boards
,
including
the
Union
Board
of
High
Schools
of
Cincinnati
and the
Associated
Press
. He was the
third
president
of the
Cincinnati
Museum
Association
. The
Tafts
made
substantial
gifts
to the
Cincinnati
Symphony
Orchestra
and the
University
of
Cincinnati
. The
May
Festival
and
summer
operas
owed
their
existence
largely
to
Anna
Sinton
and
Charles
Phelps
Taft
.
Mrs
.
Taft
and her
friend
,
Mary
Emery
,
saved
the
Cincinnati
Zoo
and
Botanical
Gardens
from
extinction
.
Upon
his
death
in
1929
,
Charles
Taft
was
remembered
as "an
internationally
known
publisher
and
philanthropist
, a
quiet
man
who
had
helped
to
spread
the
fame
of
Cincinnati.
"
Mrs
.
Taft
was
recognized
for "the
high
plane
on
which
she
strove
to
place
our
community
in
music
,
education
, and
fine
arts.
"
Raimundo
de
Madrazo
Garreta
(1841-1920)
was a
member
of an
important
artistic
dynasty
that
included
his
grandfather
and his
father
, and that
helped
to
shape
the
course
of
Spanish
art
during
the
nineteenth
century
. In his
maturity
,
Madrazo
received
many
commissions
for
portraits
from
patrons
in
such
cities
as
New
York
,
Philadelphia
, and
Buenos
Aires
. In
addition
to the
Tafts
, his
many
prominent
American
patrons
and
sitters
included
Mrs
.
Harry
Payne
Whitney
,
Mrs
.
Cornelius
Vanderbilt
, and
Mrs
.
O
.
H
.
P
.
Belmont
.
