Description	This 4.5 by 3-inch (11.43 by 7.62 cm) souvenir book was published in 1878 and contains lithographs showing all of the zoo's animal display buildings and surrounding landscape. The book contains some of the earliest known depictions of the zoo, along with three pages containing brief descriptions of each lithograph. The back inside cover is inscribed Berta Shaffer from Grandpapa Nov 4th 1878. In 1875, the Cincinnati Zoo opened for public display. The zoo had begun earlier in the decade through the efforts of Andrew Erkenbrecher, a German immigrant. Influenced by European zoos, Erkenbrecher and the other trustees planned to place their animals in naturalistic, more rural settings than the menageries of New York or Chicago. They also were in frequent communication with zoologists in Germany. Building on the German tradition of music in the zoo, concerts were held near the restaurant for benefits of visitors.
