Description	This item is a laboratory device used by inventor Charles F. Brush and other scientists. It consists of a frame that supports a spring scale. The purpose of the device is not known, but it may have been used in the development of the coils used in the arc lamp. The spring scale may have measured the force developed by the coils when current was passed through them. Or, it may have been used to measure the current drawn by an arc lamp. The force measured by the scale would be analogous to the current. The device is 17.5" high x 12" wide x 8" deep (44.5 cm x 30.5 cm x 20 cm) and weighs 17.5 pounds (8 kg). Charles Francis Brush was born in Euclid, Ohio in 1849. He became interested in physics and chemistry as a student at Cleveland High School and earned his mining engineering degree from the University of Michigan in 1869. He returned to Cleveland, where he patented more than fifty inventions throughout his career. Brush's pen coil-type dynamo is known as a predecessor to the modern generator. He patented an arc lamp in 1878, which was demonstrated on Cleveland's Public Square in 1879. The Brush Electric Company was formed in Cleveland in 1880. In 1891 it merged with the Edison General Electric Company to become the General Electric Company. After the merger Brush retired from the business world to focus on his experiments and philanthropic work. He was a founder of the Case School of Applied Science and a trustee of Western Reserve University. Brush received dozens of honorary degrees and awards for his work. He died in Cleveland on June 15, 1929. He is buried in Lake View Cemetery.
