Description	This selection of catalogs document the early years of the Western Reserve School of Design for Women, now the Cleveland Institute of Art. The "Prospectus of the Western Reserve School of Design for Women, 1883-1884" outlines the brief history of the organization, its curriculum, and expenses. Lists of students and founders are also printed in the 28-page pamphlet. The school affiliated itself with Western Reserve University in 1888, and its catalog for 1888-1889 is included here. An interesting feature of this 16-page catalog is a description of "Aims and Suggestions" for the students. The school broke its ties with Western Reserve University in 1891 and became the Cleveland School of Art. Two catalogs from 1894-1895 and 1903-1904 document the growth of the school. German painter Albert Bierstadt is one of the artists who give a favorable opinion of the school in the 15-page 1894-1895 catalog. The 24-page 1903-1904 catalog includes a sketch o f the Cleveland School of Art building at Magnolia Avenue and Juniper Drive in Cleveland. The catalogs are bound together in a 5.5" x 8" (14 cm x 20.3 cm) volume.
