Description
These
six
photographs
show
the
Holden
gallery
,
which
was
designed
specifically
to
house
the
Renaissance
Italian
collection
of
Delia
Holden
,
wife
of
Cleveland
Plain
Dealer
owner
Liberty
Holden
.
Liberty
Holden
was also the
president
of the
building
committee
for the
Cleveland
Museum
of
Art
. These
photographs
measure
8
"
x
10
"
(20.32
x
25.40
cm)
. The
Cleveland
Museum
of
Art
was
founded
by
four
prominent
Cleveland
industrialists
and
philanthropists
:
John
Huntington
,
Hinman
Hurlbut
,
Horace
Kelley
, and
Jeptha
Wade
II
.
Huntington
,
Hurlbut
, and
Kelley
each
provided
funds
for an
art
gallery
in their
wills
. The
three
estates
had a
common
trustee
in
Henry
Clay
Ranney
,
one
of
Cleveland's
leading
attorneys
.
Ranney
guided
the
process
of
reconciling
the
three
estates
to
accomplish
their
common
goal
of
establishing
an
art
museum
, and the
Cleveland
Museum
of
Art
was
incorporated
in
1913
.
Wade
donated
the
land
upon
which
the
museum
stands
. The
four
founders
were not
only
responsible
for
financing
the
museum
building
, but also
left
either
significant
collections
of
art
work
or
endowments
for the
purchase
of
art
work
that
continue
to
sustain
the
museum
. A
building
committee
was
established
in
1905
. The
Cleveland
firm
of
Hubbell
and
Benes
was
hired
as
architects
. The
firm
is
noted
for a
number
of
Cleveland
landmarks
including
the
West
Side
Market
, the
Cleveland
School
of
Art
building
, and the
Wade
Memorial
Chapel
in
Lake
View
Cemetery
. For the
art
museum
,
Hubbell
and
Benes
envisioned
a
monumental
classical
building
that would in
itself
be a
work
of
art
.
Early
plans
included
provisions
for the
museum
to
expand
into
several
classical
pavilions
.
Although
limited
by the
building
committee's
one
million
dollar
construction
cap
, the
building
project
was the
most
significant
in
Cleveland
at the
time
. The
final
plans
for the
museum
provided
for a
two-story
structure
. The
lower
level
housed
offices
,
conference
rooms
,
receiving
and
shipping
rooms
,
classrooms
, a
library
, and
lecture
hall
.
All
exhibition
galleries
were on the
second
floor
. The
arrangement
was
simple
and
symmetrical
.
Completed
in
1916
, the
inaugural
exhibition
opened
on
June
6
,
1916
.
Over
the
years
the
museum
grew
to a
complex
of
four
buildings
. The
1916
building
,
facing
Euclid
Avenue
over
the
Fine
Arts
Garden
originally
designed
by the
firm
of
Frederick
Law
Olmstead
,
remains
its
heart
.
