Description	These library cards entitled holders to borrow books from the Cleveland Public Library. In 1869, the first year of the library's existence, it was located in the Northrop and Harrington Block at Superior and Seneca Streets (now W. 3rd Street and Superior Avenue). Luther Melville Oviatt, former superintendent of Cleveland's public schools, was the librarian. That year, the library circulated 65,000 volumes and was forced to place restrictions on the number of books families could borrow. In 1877, the library's collections were housed at Cleveland's Old City Hall. I. L. Beardsley was the librarian. Both cards were issued before the library began making its stacks open to the public, a change that significantly boosted circulation. The cards, which measure approximately 1.7 by 3 inches (4.5 by 7 cm), are part of the library's archives, which is open by appointment and which maintains a wide range of materials documenting the institution's history.
