Description	This is a general admission ticket from the 1929 Cleveland National Air Races and Aeronautical Exposition. It measures 3" x 4.5" (7.62 x 11.43 cm). The 10-day event held between August 24 and September 2, 1949 drew an estimated 100,000 visitors on the first day alone. During the 1920s air racing had become a popular attraction for many Americans. The early National Air Races would travel the country and each year a different city would host the event. In 1929, the races came to Cleveland, Ohio and there they met with success and popularity beyond any of the previous venues. The Cleveland National Air Races were held at the new Hopkins Airport, a large installation with grandstands for the fans and hangars for the visiting aviators. The greatest attraction was the Thompson Race. This race surpassed the popularity of the earlier Pulitzer races by offering the spectators a five-lap, ten-mile closed-course race. Despite the high cost of life (six men died in various competitions at the 1929 races), Cleveland became the permanent home to the National Air Races. The races maintained their popularity throughout the 1930s but were canceled during World War II. After the war the Thompson race drew ex-service pilots and their surplus warbirds into competition, but came to a crashing end in 1949, when pilot Bill Odam crashed his P-51 Mustang into a nearby home, killing the residents. After 1949 the National Air Race were no longer held in Cleveland.
