Description	The Cleveland Public Library's director William Howard Brett, who served in the position from 1884 until 1918, believed that a well-trained staff was essential to providing excellent public service. He therefore instituted a program to formalize training for librarians. In a photograph from around 1894, which measures 2.4 by 3.4 inches (6.08 by 8.67 cm), Brett is shown at a staff meeting instructing library employees. He is pictured at the center of a 2.5 by 3.4 inches (6.22 by 8.67 cm) photograph teaching a training course in 1900. Linda Eastman, his assistant and successor, is the third person to his left. In 1903, Andrew Carnegie provided a $100,000 endowment that funded the establishment of the Western Reserve University Library School. Brett became the first dean of the school. The Case Western Reserve University Library School, as it was later called, closed in 1986. These images are part of the Cleveland Public Library's archives, which is open by appointment and which maintains a wide range of materials documenting the institution's history.
