Description	These two photographs show 1934 dance marathon participants at Crystal Lake Park in Marion, Ohio. The first item is a 3.5" by 5.5" (8.9 by 14 cm) print that was made into a postcard. The second image measures 8" by 10" (20.3 by 25.4 cm) and is a group photograph of participants. Several people are identified on the back of the photograph: "2nd row L.R. Ralph Mesler, a singer at Crystal Lake Park. 2nd row to the left of Mr. Mesler is a Miss Stanley. Back row lady with white blouse and eyes closed was another Stanley - the Stanleys were sisters only ones from Marion who were entered in the dance marathon ca. 1934." Dance marathons were a fad of the 1920s and 1930s. Couples danced continuously, with few breaks, for weeks and even months, to win cash and other prizes. The general rule was you could not fall asleep, although some contests allowed one part of the team to sleep so long as the other held them up and kept moving. The marathons had an announcer, band and/or phonograph, nurses, doctor, cots, dance floor and contestants, manicurists, barbers, podiatrists, and food providers. The longest running marathon lasted for 22 weeks, 3 1/2 days. Crystal Lake Amusement Park opened on May 30, 1925. Among its attractions were a merry-go-round, the Zip, the Whip, the Scooter, a pony track, aeroplane swings, and a dance pavilion. Crystal Lake was popular enough to have its own stop on the Columbus, Delaware, and Marion Interurban Railroad. The amusement park closed in 1929, a victim of the Great Depression. Later, the dance pavilion became a skating rink and the swimming pool was open on a part-time basis. Both closed in the late 1950s. A special attraction at one Crystal Lake marathon was the wedding of Betty Snyder and Dick Peters.
