From Monday's Dallr.
What was without a ttoubt the most disastrous fite that ever took place in Wayne county devastated the prosper¬ ous and beautiful village of Dalton tbisniomlDff.
The entire business portion of the tov^n Is a mass of ruins and many of the merchailts are absolutely penni¬ less. The blow is a terrible one to the town, as the greater portion of the merchants had their all invested in their buildings and stock and as the insurance amounts to less than one- third of the loss, the prospects for the town recovering from the calamity are very poor. Gentlemen who speak from a good knowledge of the flnan- I oiat condition of many of the firms say ' that not more than three or four will be able to rebuild.
The great light made by the oonfla- gration was seen at 8 6'clock in Wooster. Word of the flrd leabhed : The Republican^ reporter shortly I after i o'clock and at 5 o'clock in com- ipany with a friend started for the , town. The light from the burning vil- ! lage could still be seen as the steeds I sped on. On getting within three miles of the place great clouds of ! emoke could be seen but not a person ; was met or seen who knew that there ! had been a fire and that the town was being consumed. On reaching the outskirts of the village, men, women and children were hurrying backward and'forward carrying all manner of household effects. Further on, the streets were found filled with all manner of merohandlse and hoasehold Rooas. ureat cionas or smoke and fire flashed across the street fanned by a stiff breeze from tbe soutb. The i walls of the Wertz block the last struc¬ ture to burn, fell as the writer reached the center of the burned district. The scene was one that caused a feeling of sorrow and pity to thrill the mind, as one viewed pile after pile of smok¬ ing embers that marked the spot where only a few hoars before bad stood sub¬ stantial business blocks and homes of comfort.
