As with nations so with individuals, when they once begin
the practice of lying to hide their shame, ["they" crossed out] or their
disgraces, they go on, daily growing worse, and worse
untill they become so degenerate and corrupt, that
there is no longer any truth in them. This is exactly
the case with Great Britain even to a [word crossed out] proverb
especially her reports of Battles in which she has the
disadvantages.
The Report of A'd Genl Baynes touching the
defeat of Genl Proctor may be set down as a master
piece of imposition, on his own government and of
falsehood to the world___So glaring as not to deserve any
notice either by the army or this nation, were it not that
some of the disaffected opposition points, have taken that
official paper, as a data upon which they are dealing
out their illiberal abuse disparaging the valor, and
gallantry of Genl Harrison and his army, and ["the" crossed out]
detracting from that high ["character for" crossed out] military character
which the American people are fast acquiring
and which they so will deserve___
The army is satisfied with the self consciousness
which it feels of having deserved well of its Country__
But the nation is bound to vindicate its fame and
honour against foul aspersions and malicious falshood
