Description	Dixie for the Union consists of pro-Northern lyrics written to the tune of the popular song Dixie. The lyrics compare the struggle to preserve the Union with the American's fight against British oppression during the Revolutionary War. The word "Dixie" is never used in this version of the song. The lyrics were written by Frances J. Crosby (1820-1915), a blind poet who wrote lyrics for many well known hymns, including Blessed Assurance and Safe in the Arms of Jesus. The sheet music is four pages long and measures 10 by 13 inches (25.4 by 33 cm). Daniel Decatur Emmett wrote Dixie in 1859 as a closing song for the Bryant Minstrels' performance in New York City. The term "I wish I was in Dixie" was used among circus performers to express their desire to be in the south during the winter. The song immediately became popular across the country and was claimed by both Northern and Southern troops during the Civil War. Dixie's lyrics caused many to accuse Emmett of southern sympathies, despite his family's long history of opposing slavery. Daniel Decatur Emmett (1815-1904) was born in Mt. Vernon, Ohio to Abraham and Sarah Zerrick Emmett. He wrote many songs that gained popularity in minstrel shows, including "Dixie" "Old Dan Tucker" and "Turkey in the Straw." He showed a talent for music at a young age, and ran away from home at the age of 17 to join the army, serving as a drummer. After a two-year stint in the army, he helped to form a minstrel troop. He began composing songs in African-American dialect for these performances. In 1888, Emmett returned to Mt. Vernon, where he lived out the remaining years of his life. He became known as "Uncle Dan" and was something of a local character going about town in theatrical styled clothing and occasionally performing his songs.
