This
marble
portrait
bust
of
Anna
B
.
Sinton
(1852
circa-1931)
was
created
by
Hiram
Powers
in
1870
.
It
became
an
important
component
of
Powers
'
output
, for the
American
sculptor
was
said
to have
exceeded
even
his
Italian
contemporaries
in
naturalistic
representation
.
Meant
to
recall
the
carved
busts
of
Roman
patrician
women
, this
portrait
depicts
the
18-year-old
daughter
of
David
Sinton
(1808-1900)
dressed
chastely
in a
loose-fitting
,
relatively
high-necked
gown
and a
draped
over-garment
. Her
hair
is
pulled
away
from her
face
and
gathered
in the
simple
back
knot
that
Powers
felt
to be the
most
appropriate
style
for
women
. The
bust
measures

. The

plaster
cast
of the
portrait

of

It
can
be
used
to
compare
Powers
'
preliminary

Anna
B
.
Sinton
was
born
circa
1852
and was a
co-founder
,
along
with her
husband
Charles
Phelps
Taft
(whom
she
married
in
1873)
, of the
Taft
Museum
of
Art
. She
lived
in the
Baum-Longworth-Sinton-Taft
Home
(now
the
Taft
Museum
of
Art)
until
her
death
in
1931
. In
1927
she and her
husband
bequeathed
their
home
and
private
collection
of
690
works
of
art
to the
people
of
Cincinnati
.
Born
and
raised
in
Woodstock
,
Vermont
,
Hiram
Powers
(1805-1873)
moved
with his
family
to
Cincinnati
at the
age
of
13
. He
came
to the
attention
of
Cincinnati
art
patron
Nicholas
Longworth
,
who
owned
and
lived
in
Belmont
(now
the
Taft
Museum
of
Art)
during
the
mid-nineteenth
century
. His
marble
sculpture
The
Greek
Slave
won
grand
prize
at the
Western
Art
Union
art
show
in
Cincinnati
in
1850
and
is
considered
one
of the
best
American
marble
sculptures
of the
nineteenth
century
.
