Alumni
Gateway
at
Ohio
University
in
1915
. The
first
photograph
shows
Governor
Frank
Willis
at the
dedication
ceremony
,
while
the
second
shows
the
unveiling
of the
gateway
. The
photographs
are
3.25

. The
university
erected
the
gateway
In
1915
to
commemorate
the
centennial
of the
first
diplomas
granted
in the
Northwest
Territory
.
It
stands
at the
corner
of
campus
opposite
downtown
Athens
.
Ohio
University
was
founded
in
1804
,
one
year
after
Ohio
became
a
state
.
Revolutionary
War
veterans
from
New
England
conceived
the
idea
for a
university
in
1786
,
when
they
purchased
land
in the
Northwest
Territory
through
the
Ohio
Company
of
Associates
. The
Northwest
Ordinance
,
passed
in
1787
, also
encouraged
"
schools
and the
means
of
education.
"
Funding
for a
university
came
from
revenue
earned
from
leases
in
two
townships
in the
Ohio
Company
Purchase
.
Ohio
University
opened
in
1808
with
three
students
. The
school
granted
its
first
diplomas
in
1815
.
Enrollment
remained
small
and the
university
graduated
only
about
145
students
in its
first
six
decades
. Its
fortunes
gradually
began
to
improve
late
in the
19th
century
,
particularly
after
it
started
receiving
state
support
in the
early
1880s
.
