Scripps's
Miramar
Ranch

miles
north
of
San
Diego)
. In the
letter
,
Scripps
explains
his
method
of
launching
profitable
newspapers
,
giving
examples
of
practices
followed
at
other
Scripps
papers
,
including
the
Cincinnati
Post
and
Cleveland
Press
. He also
exhorts
Gohen
to
follow
his
instructions
with
regard
to
running
the
San
Francisco
paper
.

Scripps
(1854-1926)
was
born
near
Rushville
,
Illinois
, the
youngest
child
of
James
Mogg
Scripps
and his
third
wife
Julia
Osborn
Scripps
. His
father
had
eight
children
with his
second
wife
,
two
of
whom
,
James
E
. and
Ellen
Browning
Scripps
were
major
figures
in the
life
of
E.W
.
Scripps
. His
long
career
in
journalism
began
in
1873
at the
Detroit
Evening
News
,
where
he
worked
with
James
E.
,
Ellen
, and his
half-brother
George
.
Scripps
left
Detroit
in
1878
to
start
the
Cleveland
Penny
Press
. Its
success
allowed
Scripps
to
launch
similar
papers
in
St
.
Louis
(1880)
and
Cincinnati
(1883)
.
Although
the
St
.
Louis
Evening
Chronicle
was
unable
to
compete
with
Joseph
Pulitzer's
Post-Dispatch
, the
Cincinnati
Penny
Post
,
(later
renamed
the
Post)
prospered
. In
1890
,
Scripps
laid
the
foundation
of a
media
dynasty
with the
formation
of the
Scripps-McRae
League
. The
league
launched
32
newspapers
and
acquired
15
others
,
among
which
were the
Akron
Press
,
Columbus
Citizen
, and
Youngstown
Telegram
.
It
was
later
renamed
Scripps
Howard
in
recognition
of
Butler
County
native
Roy
W
.
Howard's
contributions
to the
corporation
.
Scripps
also
started
United
Press
International
(UPI)
to
compete
with the
Associated
Press
and the
Newspaper
Enterprise
Association
to
provide
his
papers
with
features
and
editorial
content
.
