Description	This work is the first of two books of poetry written by James Edwin Campbell (1867-1895), an African American poet born in Pomeroy, Ohio. The poems, published when Campbell was only twenty years old, cover a range of topics, from verses on classical mythology to laments on racial inequality. Ninety-six pages long, the volume measures approximately 4.5 by 6 inches (11.43 by 15.24 cm). Campbell attended Pomeroy High School, where he was active in the literary society. After graduation, he was a teacher in nearby Rutland, before becoming the editor of the West Virginia Enterprise in Charleston. Campbell also served as the first president of the West Virginia Colored Institute, later called West Virginia State College. He died in Pomeroy at age 28.
