Description	These six 14.3" x 8.3" (36.3 x 21.1 cm) drawings from Tomfoolery, a publication of Central High School in Dayton, feature the work of poet Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906) and artist Ernest Blumenschein (1874-1960). A drawing titled "The Philomatheans" shows the members of a literary society at the school, with Dunbar in the front row on the left. Another page features "My Best Girl" a poem written by Dunbar. These drawings are part of an extensive collection of materials relating to Paul Laurence Dunbar at the Dayton and Montgomery County Public Library. The finding aid is available online. Blumenschein, the editor and illustrator of Tomfoolery, later founded the Taos Art Colony in Arizona and is well-known for his paintings of the Southwest and American Indians. Born in Pittsburgh, Blumenschein grew up in Dayton, where his father was a musician with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. He enrolled at the Cincinnati College of Music and the Cincinnati Art Academy following his graduation from Central High School. After studying in Europe, Blumenschein returned to the U.S. and took a job illustrating for McClure's magazine. On a trip to Taos he was inspired by the landscape and the American Indian cultures of New Mexico and eventually moved to Taos in 1918. Dunbar is acknowledged as the first significant African American poet in the United States. He was born the son of former slaves on June 27, 1872 in Dayton, Ohio. After high school, the Wright brothers assisted Dunbar in publishing the Dayton Tattler, an African-American newspaper. His first book of poetry, Oak and Ivy, was published in 1893. It was followed by Lyrics of a Lowly Life, and Majors and Minors, ten other books of poetry, four books of short stories, five novels and a play. Dunbar died of tuberculosis on February 9, 1906.
