moved
to
Seneca
County
in
1827
shortly
after
his
marriage
to
Laura
Crocker
. He
purchased
two
thousand
acres
of
land
along
with his
father
and
brother-in-law
in the
area
that would
become
Fostoria
.
Foster
began
a
successful
mercantile
and
credit
business
.
Foster's
residence
is
pictured
on the
left
of the
drawing
. His
son
,
Charles
Foster
,
(1828-1904)
,
served
as
governor
of
Ohio
from
1880
to
1884
.
Born
in
Tiffin
,
Foster
worked
in his
father's
dry
goods
store
as a
young
man
and
eventually
went
into
business
with him. A
Republican
,
Foster
was
elected
to the
U.S
.
Congress
in
1871
. He was
re-elected
three
times
before
accepting
the
nomination
for
governor
. As
governor
,
Foster
supported
sound-money
policies
and
drew
upon
his
experience
as a
businessman
in
making
policy
. His
support
of the
temperance
movement
through
high
taxes
on
alcohol
contributed
to his
defeat
for
re-election
in
1883
.
Foster
also
served
as
secretary
of the
treasury
under
President
Benjamin
Harrison
from
1891-1893
. He
died
in
Springfield
,
Ohio
in
1904
and
is
buried
in
Fostoria's
Fountain
Cemetery
.
