Description	These two playbills document performances at the Faurot Opera House in Lima. The first is for a production of Rip Van Winkle starring Joseph Jefferson. The second is for Hoop of Gold by Mortimer Murdock. The playbills include advertisements for local businesses. They measure 6" x 8.5" (15.24 x 20.32 cm). Benjamin C. Faurot (1829-1904) built the Faurot Opera House and Music Hall in 1882. The Opera House was described as "one of the finest in the United States" with an extensive stage, large seating capacity, and elaborate decoration. Faurot was born in New York, but lived on his father's farm in Marion County, Ohio until age 21. He went to Lima as an employee of the Pennsylvania Railroad. An enterprising man, Faurot incorporated the National Deposit Bank (later known as Allen County Bank) in 1865 and went on to found the Lima Electric Light Company. After a series of disputed land deals, he died in poverty in 1904.
