Description	This photograph shows five steamers docked at the Doller Dock at Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island. The ships carried members of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.), a Civil War veterans organization, who had visited the island. The steamers are (left to right) R.N. Rice, Lake Breeze, Evening Star, Reindeer, and Jay Cooke. This image measures 6" by 8" (15.24 by 20.3 cm). R.N. Rice carried passengers from Detroit, the Lake Breeze from Toledo and the Reindeer from Vermilion and Huron. Evening Star carried passengers to Put-in-Bay and the other Lake Erie islands from 1866 to 1873. It measured 168 feet and could carry nearly 400 passengers. The steamer Jay Cooke ran from Detroit to the Lake Erie Islands from 1868 to 1878 and then ferried passengers from Sandusky to the islands as the City of Sandusky. The engine from Jay Cooke was rebuilt in 1895 and placed in the Arrow.
