Description	This silk taffeta newspaper is a special edition of the Gallipolis Daily Journal for May 1, 1895. It was produced by the Thursday Club, a women's study and literary group, in cooperation with the newspaper's editors. The entire newspaper is 16 pages and measures 15.4" by 22.25" (39.12 by 56.52 cm). The first four pages are included here and include byline information and a column on women's clubs. Mrs. Addie Vanden (first librarian), Miss Amy Nash, and Miss Nellei Dages designed the handpainted floral borders that appear on the copy. Bob Herbert produced the sketch on the cover. The auction of this paper brought $500 and the advertising inside realized $1,500. All of the proceeds from the paper went to the establishment of the first library in Gallipolis. The library was housed in two rooms on the second floor of the Lupton Building, where in November 1898 the collection was opened to the public with Mrs. Addie Vanden as librarian. The library began with a collection of 1,700 volumes and a treasury of $800.00
