Description	This stereoview and two photographs document the Great Western Band of Sandusky, Ohio. The first image is a 7" x 4" (17.8 x 10.16 cm) stereoview by Sandusky photographer A.C. Platt showing the band with their instruments in 1880. Another image, also taken by A.C. Platt at about the same time, measures 8.25" x 6.5" (20.96 cm x 16.51 cm). A final photograph shows the band in 1873, with eighteen musicians and a drum major. The photograph is 9.5" x 8" (24.13 x 20.32 cm). The Great Western Band, formed in 1867 by the consolidation of the Sandusky City Band and the Old Jaeger Band, was one of the most popular bands in Sandusky, Ohio in the late nineteenth century. The band performed at parties, the local opera house, Cedar Point, and many other places. The local band or orchestra was one of the more popular forms of entertainment in the late nineteenth century. Many towns had a band to provide music at special events, or to provide an evening's entertainment. Sandusky had several bands, offering various musical forms and playing at locations throughout the area. One of the earliest bands in Sandusky, the Ogontz Band, was formed in 1845. Many more formed shortly thereafter, with the peak period for bands in Sandusky being ca. 1880 to 1910.
