Description	Eliza Jane Pulse Scott recounts the story of her parents George and Eliza Pulse in her book Memorial Sketches. George Pulse was a farmer who also taught school, his wife Eliza was born into a slaveholding family, but was orphaned at a young age and forced to support herself as a seamstress. The Pulses lived near Lynchburg in Highland County. The book contains 294 pages. Each page measures 5 by 7.5 inches (12.7 by 19.05 cm). The front page is inscribed "Presented to Miss Mary C. Holmes by her devoted cousin E. J. P. Scott. June 15th 1899." Chapter five, which is reproduced here, discusses a cholera outbreak and the first church in the area. She also discusses her parents' temperance beliefs, which were not popular at the time.
