Description	Armbruster Scenic Studio frequently designed sets that could be used in a variety of productions. These three designs are for pieces of scenery used in plays calling for a Gothic setting. The first is a design for Gothic woodwork. The watercolor design measures 9.7 by 8 inches (24.6 by 20.3 cm). Next is a depiction of a chamber in a design measuring 15.3 by 9.2 inches (38.8 by 23.36 cm). The final design is a hallway in a church or castle. The design measures 15.75 by 7.75 inches (40 by 19.68 cm). Armbruster (1839-1920) was born in Wurttemburg, Germany and studied art in his native country and Paris before migrating to the United States. He arrived in Cincinnati and worked as an art-glass painter and theatrical designer. Armbruster enlisted in the 28th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (O.V.I.) at the outbreak of the Civil War and saw action at Bull Run and Antietam. After the war, Armbruster settled in Columbus, where he worked as a portrait painter and established the Armbruster Scenic Studio in 1875. During the late nineteenth century it was associated with a number of the most popular touring theatre companies in America among which were Al G. Field, Modjeska, Robert Mantell, and the Hanford-Tyler-MacLean companies. As specialists catering to the needs of traveling productions, the Armbruster studio became one of the largest scenic studios in America. Scenery designed by Armbruster was seen all over the United States, including New York City. These designs are part of a large collection of Armbruster material held by the Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee Theatre Research Institute at The Ohio State University.
