Description	These three 8" x 10" (20.32 x 25.4 cm) photographs are of vessels built by the American Shipbuilding Company in Lorain, Ohio. The first picture shows the James B. Neilson, a "whaleback" ore carrier. A whaleback is a form of vessel, often with steam power, having sharp ends and a very convex upper deck that was often used on the Great Lakes. Two other photographs show the war vessel 389 from World War II. The wooden shipbuilding industry began in Lorain in the early 1800s. In 1897, the Cleveland Shipbuilding Company broke ground for the first steel shipyard on the Black River. In 1899, the shipyard became part of the American Shipbuilding Company. For a time, it was the largest freshwater shipyard and one of the leading employers of Lorain. In the 1980s, ship construction and repair on the Great Lakes declined. The American Shipbuilding Company shifted its focus away from the Great Lakes to its shipyards in Tampa and Nashville. On December 1, 1983, the company announced the closing of its Lorain shipyard.
